The paintings in this exhibition represent the past 18 months of my studio practice. After working on a series of abstracts with carefully painted layers of collage, I set out to produce work that was more gestural and spontaneous. I live on the coast and my previous work was often deeply effected by the sea, so studying it further was a natural progression. These oil paintings—of varying degrees of abstraction—are a culmination of my investigation.
In this case, the word ephemeral describes the moment when the relationship between the sea, sky and other elements will never be the same again. I use this brief interaction—and my fleeting memory of it—as inspiration in the studio. Ephemeral Seas also portrays the impermanence of the ocean and the natural world as a whole.
